Need Not You: A Postmortem
Need Not You » Devlog
Hello,
First of all I would like to thank everyone who has played or supported Need Not You, I greatly appreciate all of you and what you do. I wanted to talk about this project a bit so that's what this devlog is for. Mainly how I feel about the development, the response, and my future plans. If you want to know some deeper meaning behind the game, you won't be getting an answer here. ;b
Development:
origin of the main character's sprite from a game jam last year
The asset for the character actually dates back to about a year ago. I made the main character sprites for the Great Autumn Game Jam: 2021 and I originally was going to make a platformer in RayLib. I could not for the life of me figure out how to make a platformer in Raylib so I gave up with that lol. The picture above is about as far as I got. There was also some big life events happening around that time that made me give up on that and after that I basically quit gamedev until around March of this year. So, up until this point I've been making whatever I wanted to make and I was getting a bit burnt out so I haven't been making anything for like a month or two now, but then I saw this jam and it seemed different and fun so it really sparked my interest again.
Need Not You early in development
That all comes to this project, Need Not You, and what came out of the development of it. Above are a few pictures from like the first of the four days of development for this game. This game felt really different to make than other games I made before and it was very creatively satisfying and fun to make. I think part of the reason it was so fun is that I had no plan starting making this game, I just put some assets into Godot and see what I could make. I was playing around with some filters and people started telling me it looked like a horror game. So, that's the route I went down. There wasn't much that went into the game behind the scenes, but I think the atmosphere I made it seem deeper than it was. Which was great because that meant I could just make a small game that says what it wanted to say and let other people make their own interpretations from it.
Response:
analytics for Need Not You as of 6pm Saturday, August 13th
This probably leads into the response from the game I've gotten so far. Which, if i'm being honest, has been a lot better than I was expecting. I thought people might think it's too weird or too ambiguous. However, people have been generally very positive, which is great! The reactions I've been getting have been pretty close to what I wanted them to be while making it. So, overall, I think this has been a success and I am very proud of this project. There are things that I could fix and change, and I will absolutely be keeping all of the feedback I've been getting to make my future projects better, but I don't think I would change this. I think it came out the way I wanted it to and that if I tried to change something I'd probably break it lol.
(Which is another thing I should probably talk about, the game behind the scenes is an absolute mess and it is a miracle that it functions at all lol.)
I don't wanna talk too long about numbers, because it seems kinda taboo to talk about numbers for too long. However, this game has so far far outdone my predictions for how this game was going to do. I was predicting around 100 views and around 50 browser plays. Which, it has already exceeded, and I predict that those numbers will keep going up once the LOWREZJAM ends and the voting period starts. So, that will be cool to keep track of.
(before I start the next section, I wanted to give a shout out to GoopyApple TV for doing a let's play of Need Not You on Youtube. Which, you can check out below)
Future Plans:
As for my future plans, they are top secret. Classified. So secretive that not even I know. Seriously though, school is starting back up next week so I will probably be slowing down a bit. I still would like to get one or two games out before the end of the year. I'm not 100% sure on what they will be yet, but I'm currently going with the flow to see what happens. I am also considering broadening my horizons a bit and doing a bit more with my Youtube channel that I've kinda just been letting collect dust for months now lol. So yeah, if you'd like to see any of that, be sure to follow me here on itch.io or Twitter or even on Youtube.
Alrighty, well, with that I'm out I'll see you when my next game comes our or not depending on if you want the next thing thanks. Here some links:
